The best advice given to me about evaluating a potential job came from someone who had done it right for 20 years. He told me, “Don’t just pick the job, also pick the manager.” He understood, the right manager was key to success – learning the job and being groomed for the next one. So, in essence the job is as bad as the manager. A good manager can make even a bad job tolerable and good job great.
Of course the converse is true. Bad Managers can make good jobs intolerable.
If you are a manager, be one that people seek out. Eagerly share and mentor. Great personal dividends will follow.
